People's Signature Campaign on the World Food(less) Day

Campaign for People’s Solutions to Food Crisis (CPSF) is a concerted effort of a communion of organizations united in this regard. A petition bearing our suggestions for solving the current food crisis has already hit the roads, covering 16 districts across Sri Lanka, seeking the support and recognition of the masses. People from all walks of life; the rural, urban and the estate sector populations in their thousands have already approved of the aforesaid alternative list of suggestions so far.

In such spirit we invite you one and all to be a part of the people's signature campaign commemorating the World Food Day of the 16th of October, 2008. The proceedings will be on from 07.00 am to 10.00 am, in front of the Railway Station, Fort, Colombo. Sri Lanka.

time for a comprehensive shift in economic policy

World food prices increased by 40% last year and in Sri Lanka it was much higher. The price of essential food such as rice, bread and milk increased two or three times and the impact is greatest on the poor who spend about 80% of their income on food. This is part of a global crisis in which more and more people cannot feed themselves or their children. Alongside the current high cost of living increase this situation is extremely dangerous. more »

This article is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Paddy Lands Act of 1958. The Paddy Lands Act of 1958 is an important socialist enactment passed by parliament 50 years ago. In doing so, we should also commemorate its main author the great political leader, the late Mr. Phillip Gunawardena, who was the Minister of Agriculture and Lands during the Primership of the late Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike.
